Lake Rotokawau

Lake Rotokawau extends 920 meters in length and 710 meters in width, reaching an elevation of 330 meters above sea level in New Zealand.

The volcanic explosion that formed Lake Rotokawau occurred approximately 4,000 years ago, creating steep cliffs up to 90 meters around its perimeter.

Ngāti Rangiteaorere maintains ownership and management of Lake Rotokawau, preserving traditional connections between local Māori communities and this natural water body.

Visitors can reach Lake Rotokawau through Lake Rotokawau Road, which connects to State Highway 30 at Tikitere near Hell's Gate.

The lake maintains an average depth of 43.7 meters and houses diverse fish species including koaro, banded kokopu, and both long-finned and short-finned eels.
