Prince Henry Hospital, Sydney, Historic hospital site in Little Bay, Australia
Prince Henry Hospital is a former hospital complex on the Little Bay headland with preserved medical buildings and administrative structures spread across the site. The location sits on a coastal outcrop with gardens and various structures that remain from its decades of operation.
The hospital was founded in 1881 as the Coast Hospital and was New South Wales' first facility dedicated to treating contagious diseases. After more than a century of medical work, the facility closed its doors in 2003.
The museum displays how nursing and medical care evolved through the decades and reflects the lives of patients treated here. The collection shows the different illnesses and healing approaches that shaped the hospital's work.
The site is accessible mainly during specific museum visiting days when guided tours are offered. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for uneven terrain and stairs, as the complex sits on elevated coastal ground.
The Coast Chapel within the complex remains active for weddings and memorial services and even offers livestreaming for those unable to attend in person. This active religious space shows how the chapel has long supported the well-being of patients and staff.
