Fort Street High School, high school in Sydney, Australia
Fort Street High School is a government school in Sydney's inner west located in Petersham, serving students from early years through Year 12. The main building displays Romanesque architecture and is now called the Wilkins Building, while facilities include science labs, gyms, sports fields, and technology workshops alongside a library and performance hall.
Founded in 1849, it is Australia's oldest government high school, originally established at Observatory Hill as a model school for both boys and girls. After moving to its current Petersham location in 1916, it split into separate boys and girls schools before reuniting as a co-educational institution in recent times.
The school operates a house system dividing students into five groups named after notable figures, fostering friendly competition in sports and academics. This structure builds community bonds and gives students a sense of belonging to something larger than their individual classes.
Admission is based on academic merit rather than where students live, with limited places available each year. Families interested in the school are encouraged to visit the grounds and tour the facilities to get a sense of the environment.
Each year, Year 12 students perform FLOP, a show featuring funny sketches and videos about school life, continuing a tradition of many years. This annual event gives departing students a chance to showcase their creativity and humor before leaving.
