Silverwater Correctional Complex, Maximum and minimum security prison complex in Silverwater, Australia
Silverwater Correctional Complex is a prison facility with four separate units housing both male and female inmates across maximum and minimum security levels west of Sydney. The complex spans a large area and accommodates different types of prisoners depending on their security classification.
The complex was established in 1970 and stands on the grounds of the former Newington House, a colonial-era mansion that was later converted into an asylum. The property then transitioned to its current use as a correctional facility.
The facility offers education and training where inmates can earn qualifications and develop job skills during their time here. These programs help people prepare for life after release.
Visitors must arrange appointments well in advance as access to the site is restricted and requires prior authorization. Using public transportation is advisable since parking options are limited.
In 1999, prisoner John Killick attempted an escape using a helicopter that his partner hijacked from outside the facility. The six-week pursuit by authorities that followed made it one of the most notable incidents in the facility's history.
