Bennelong Bridge, Transit bridge in Rhodes, Australia
Bennelong Bridge is a 330 meter transit crossing over Homebush Bay with separate lanes dedicated to buses, cyclists, and pedestrians. The structure includes viewing areas overlooking the Parramatta River and connects the suburbs of Rhodes and Wentworth Point.
Construction began in September 2014 and the bridge officially opened on May 22, 2016 following an agreement between the state and property developers. Funding came through a Voluntary Planning Agreement, which served as an innovative approach to infrastructure delivery.
The bridge carries the name of Bennelong, a significant figure in Aboriginal history, and links two redeveloped urban areas. It reflects efforts to honor historical individuals within modern city development.
The nearest train station is about 600 meters away at Rhodes, while Marina Square shopping centre at the Wentworth Point end offers free parking. The bridge is well marked with clear pedestrian and cycling areas that are easy to navigate.
The bridge was groundbreaking as Sydney's first infrastructure designed solely for buses, cyclists, and pedestrians with no private car access. This shortcut eliminates what would otherwise be an 8 kilometer detour, providing a direct 330 meter crossing over the bay.
