University Hall and Cottages is a building complex at 281-285 Broadway in Glebe that includes student residences and several outbuildings. The site brings together structures from the late 1800s that remain occupied by students today.
The complex took shape between 1889 and 1890, beginning as University Hotel that served as a gateway to Glebe at the Broadway and Glebe Point Road intersection. Converting the original hotel into student housing determined how the location would be used afterward.
The ballroom showcases specific roof truss construction techniques that reflect building methods favored during colonial New South Wales. These handcrafted details become visible when you step into the space.
The site remains student housing and is not freely open to visitors at all times. Best approach is to view the exterior and details from the public street to appreciate the architecture without disrupting residents.
The building earned a place on the New South Wales State Heritage Register in 1999, marking its structural value to university history. This recognition showed how the construction supported student life from the beginning.
