Children's Chapel, St James' Church, Religious space for children at St James' Church in Sydney, Australia
The Children's Chapel occupies the crypt area of St James' Church, featuring golden-leafed murals that depict scenes around Sydney Harbour.
The chapel opened its doors in December 1929 with murals created by Ethel Anderson and the Turramurra Wall Painters Union between October and December.
The murals transfer the Christmas carol 'As I Sat Under A Sycamore Tree' to Sydney's context, connecting local children with religious narratives.
The chapel holds special Eucharist services for children on the first Sunday of each month, adapting religious ceremonies for younger participants.
The walls contain three thousand gold leaf pieces that create different light effects throughout the day while showing the Sydney Harbour Bridge construction.
