MLC Centre, Modernist skyscraper in Sydney, Australia
MLC Centre is a skyscraper in Sydney that rises 228 meters with an octagonal floor plan supported by eight load-bearing columns that taper toward the top. Inside, 67 floors above ground are served by 26 elevators, while the podium level houses a shopping center and the renovated Theatre Royal.
Construction of the building from 1972 to 1977 required demolition of several existing structures, including the Australia Hotel and the original Theatre Royal. This redevelopment significantly reshaped the area of Sydney where it stands.
The building received the Sir John Sulman Medal from the Australian Institute of Architects for its distinctive white concrete design. This recognition reflects how architects created a structure that stood out through thoughtful design choices.
The building is well connected to public transportation and easily reached from the city center. Visitors should know that access to the upper floors is restricted, but the shopping center and theater in the podium are freely accessible.
The building held the title of Australia's tallest for nine years until Melbourne's Rialto Towers surpassed it in 1986. This brief time at the top marked an important milestone in Australian architectural history.
