Regimental Square, War memorial in Wynyard, Sydney, Australia
Regimental Square is a war memorial on Wynyard Street in the central business district of Sydney, Australia. A sandstone wall runs the full width of the street and carries bronze soldier sculptures alongside the names of those who fell.
The memorial was unveiled in 1976 by the Royal Australian Regiment Association to honor Australian service in Korea, Malaya, and Vietnam. It was built at a time when Australia was beginning to publicly acknowledge these conflicts.
The memorial displays the names of soldiers from several battalions who served in Vietnam and Malaya, carved into the sandstone wall. Passersby encounter these names as part of their daily commute through this part of the city.
The memorial sits close to George Street in Sydney's central business district and is easy to reach on foot. Stopping during the day gives the best chance to read the wall without heavy foot traffic around you.
South Korea contributed 3,000 dollars toward the cost of building this memorial, as a gesture of recognition for Australian service during the Korean War. This foreign contribution is rarely mentioned but is part of the documented history of the site.
