348-352 George Street is an office building designed in Federation Romanesque style, featuring roughly dressed stone exterior walls with semicircular openings and interior load-bearing walls of trachyte. It preserves original interior elements including marble panels, decorative glass ceilings, and vintage elevator cabins.
Constructed in 1894, the building was designed by Edward Raht and erected by Hudson and Loveridge. It replaced three earlier structures that occupied the site, including an auction house and a music shop.
From its upper floor, a women's publication emerged in 1898 that advocated for female political voices and participation. The building thus served as a meeting point and workspace where women could organize beyond the domestic sphere.
Located in downtown Sydney, the building remains in commercial use with accessible public areas including hallways and entrance zones. The most striking architectural details are visible from the street and in the entry area, which rewards close observation.
The entrance features a massive stone arch made from individual blocks each weighing several tons, representing an exceptional engineering feat for the 1890s. This construction showcases the precision and craftsmanship required to assemble such heavy stone components without modern machinery.
