Evatt House, Heritage house in Wahroonga, New South Wales, Australia.
Evatt House is a Georgian Revival villa on Junction Road in Wahroonga with expansive gardens originally planted with native Australian trees. The property was expanded after 1986 with additional structures, including a clay tennis court on the western section of the grounds.
Architect Stuart Traill designed this residence in 1940 for Clive Raleigh Evatt Senior, a Labor politician from New South Wales and former Minister for Education. The house was built during a period when suburban architecture was embracing new stylistic directions.
The residence served as a gathering place for artists, writers, and performers from Australia and abroad during the mid-twentieth century. Visitors can see the spaces where these creative figures spent time together and shared ideas.
The garden requires careful exploration as many of the native plants are sensitive and the grounds slope in places. The best time to visit is early in the day when light is favorable and pathways are less crowded with other visitors.
The property preserves a rare collection of over one hundred native trees, an ambitious gardening experiment from the 1940s. This large-scale gathering of native species shows an early attempt to maintain Australian vegetation in a residential setting.
