Hornsby Water Clock, Water clock sculpture in Florence Street mall, Hornsby, Australia.
The Hornsby Water Clock is an 8-meter-tall sculpture made of bronze, stainless steel, and glass located in the Florence Street mall. The structure combines three different time measurement systems within its integrated design.
The sculpture was created in the 1990s through collaboration between a local artist and engineers working on the design. Its completion marked an important milestone in the public art landscape of the local area.
The sculpture displays depictions of local wildlife like the Tawny frogmouth and Rainbow lorikeet, representing the natural heritage of the area. These animal representations make visitors notice and connect with the animals that belong to the local landscape.
The sculpture is easy to access since it sits in a busy shopping area where people move freely around it. Visitors can observe the different timekeeping functions at any time while walking through the mall.
The sculpture operates through a sophisticated water filtration system that powers multiple timekeeping mechanisms rotating on a pontoon. A 17-note bronze carillon rings hourly and adds a sound element to the different timekeeping systems.
