Mahratta, Wahroonga, Art Deco mansion in Wahroonga, Australia.

Mahratta is an Art Deco mansion in Wahroonga situated on Pacific Highway, distinguished by curved architectural elements and circular motifs throughout its design. The interior features a grand staircase that stands as a focal point of the residence's architectural composition.

The land originated from a 260-hectare grant to Thomas Hyndes in 1838 and gradually transitioned from timber production into a private residence. This shift marked the broader change of the region from resource extraction to suburban living.

The name reflects the owner's personal connection to Indian history and his family heritage. This choice of nomenclature carries meaning tied to his grandfather's legacy in colonial Australia.

The School of Philosophy operates and maintains the property, providing public courses, workshops, and events open to visitors throughout the year. Those interested can participate in these educational programs to experience the space.

Paul Sorensen designed the gardens as part of a broader vision for the property, leaving behind one of the few surviving examples of his landscape work in the Sydney region. His approach to garden design is uncommon to find in such good condition today.
