Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre, sports facility in Queensland, Australia
The Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre is a large sports stadium in Nathan with capacity for almost 50,000 people. The facility features an open main field, running tracks, side stands, and various training areas designed to accommodate multiple sports.
The facility opened in 1975 and was renamed Queen Elizabeth II Stadium in 1977 to honor the queen's Silver Jubilee. It hosted the Commonwealth Games in 1982 and later became home to the Brisbane Broncos rugby team from 1993 to 2003.
The name Queen Elizabeth II Stadium honored the queen's Silver Jubilee when adopted in 1977. Today it serves as a gathering place for local sports clubs and athletes who train and compete regularly throughout the year.
The stadium is easily reached by public buses from various parts of Brisbane, with stops on Mains Road and Kessels Road. During large events, parking can be limited, so arriving early or using public transport is recommended.
The stadium hosted the Davis Cup in 1999 with temporary tennis courts built on the grass field, an unusual adaptation for an athletics arena. The rough grass surface proved challenging for elite-level play.
