Cribb Island, Former coastal settlement in Brisbane, Australia
Cribb Island was a coastal settlement located in Moreton Bay near Brisbane, Queensland. The landform extended along the water's edge and was bordered by creeks, salt marshes, and shallow tidal areas.
John George Cribb acquired the land in 1863 from the Queensland Government, establishing the foundation for the island settlement. The Australian Government took control in the 1970s to expand Brisbane Airport, resulting in the removal of all residents by 1980.
The settlement attracted traders and fishermen who took advantage of the rich marine resources in the nearby waters and tidal flats. People gathered here because of the abundant catch and the connection to Moreton Bay's waterways.
The island no longer exists as a settlement and is now part of Brisbane Airport, making direct access limited or impossible for visitors. Before planning a visit, check whether any heritage sites or viewing areas related to the former settlement are accessible to the public.
The Bee Gees, the legendary Australian music trio, spent their formative years on the island and attended school there before becoming international stars. This connection to the location remains a notable part of the brothers' early history.
