Wynnum Wading Pool, Heritage tidal pool in Wynnum, Australia
Wynnum Wading Pool is an artificial concrete basin with an oval shape designed for swimming and wading. Water from Moreton Bay flows into the pool during high tide through pipes in the sea wall, with flood gates controlling the water level.
The pool was built in 1932 by Brisbane City Council as a work relief project during the Great Depression. This construction provided employment for local workers at a time when jobs were scarce in the region.
The area around the pool includes a sandstone drinking fountain memorial dedicated to W H Barnes, a former local politician. This monument reflects how the community honors its public figures and local history.
Fresh sand is regularly added to maintain a natural beach-like feel around the pool area. The best time to visit is during high tide when water flows into the basin for a comfortable swimming experience.
The pool operates on a natural tidal system, drawing water directly from Moreton Bay without requiring pumps or mechanical equipment. This simple design has allowed it to function reliably for generations since its creation.
