Blackwater

Blackwater is a town in Queensland's Central Highlands region, located near several large coal mining operations. The area is shaped by mining infrastructure and the presence of this industry throughout the landscape.

Explorer Ludwig Leichhardt discovered coal deposits in the region during an 1845 expedition, which later prompted mining development in the area. This early finding became the foundation for the town's economic growth and settlement.

The Blackwater International Coal Centre displays works by local artists and houses the Australian Coal Mining Museum with exhibits on mining operations. The center reflects how important this industry is to the community and the role it plays in daily life.

Bedford Weir, about 25 kilometers north of town, provides facilities for camping, boating, and fishing with showers and barbecue areas available. Visitors should prepare for seasonal conditions and check road access beforehand to avoid unexpected complications.

Lions Park displays numerous national flags representing countries whose citizens worked in coal mining. This collection of flags tells the story of international workers who built the local industry.
