Daydream Island, Resort island in Whitsunday Region, Australia
Daydream Island is a compact resort island in the Whitsunday archipelago featuring white sand beaches, coral reefs, and tropical gardens across its terrain. The island rises to about 51 meters high and is fully developed as a vacation destination.
The island became a tourist destination in the 1930s when settlers built the first lodgings, marking the start of its hospitality growth. The resort has since developed steadily as a vacation destination.
The Living Reef displays over a hundred marine species in a lagoon setting, letting you see the biodiversity of the Great Barrier Reef ecosystem up close. Visitors can watch corals and fish right beside the resort without venturing far into deeper waters.
Visitors reach the island via a roughly 30-minute ferry ride from Airlie Beach, with regular departures throughout the day from the mainland terminal. Upon arrival, allow time for check-in and getting oriented to the resort layout.
The resort maintains a roughly 200-meter living coral reef system wrapped around the main building, allowing guests to watch marine life from different vantage points. This closeness to living coral makes the experience special since you can see underwater life without special equipment.
