Anderson Park, Townsville

Anderson Park is a 20-hectare arboretum in Mundingburra featuring tropical trees, palms, and pandanus species from northern Queensland and arid tropical regions worldwide. The grounds include walking tracks, picnic areas, and wheelchair accessible facilities for visitors.

The land was acquired in 1929 from the Water and Electricity Supply Department, and initial plantings of Raintree, Eucalyptus, and Melaleuca began in 1932. These early trees laid the foundation for the diverse arboretum that exists today.

The park displays native palms and gingers that reflect the plant diversity of Far North Queensland. Walking through these sections, you notice how these species shape the natural environment of the region.

The park is located in the Mundingburra area and easy to explore on foot, with clear walking tracks and rest areas distributed throughout the grounds. Visitors should bring sturdy shoes and water, especially on warm days, as shade from trees varies across different sections.

The park houses one of the largest cultivated collections of pandanus species, including varieties from Australia, New Guinea, and Southeast Asia spread throughout the grounds. This rare gathering of these distinctive plants draws interest from plant enthusiasts visiting the region.
