Townsville Baptist Church

Townsville Baptist Church is a single-story brick structure located at 513 Sturt Street that sits directly on granite outcrops. The building features buttressed walls and pointed arch windows throughout its rendered surface.

The original 1893 building was severely damaged by a cyclone, prompting the congregation to use temporary structures while planning a replacement. The current church was built in 1922 using salvaged bricks from a disused powder magazine.

The interior reflects Protestant design traditions with open spaces, coffered ceilings, and ornamental details that shaped how the congregation gathered. These design choices shaped the worship experience for generations of community members.

The building sits at the corner of Sturt and Fletcher Streets in Townsville's city center with clear views toward Ross Creek. The location is easy to find and offers space to appreciate the structure from different angles.

The 30,000 bricks used in construction came from a disused powder magazine near Townsville rather than a new production source. This material reuse shows how the congregation resourcefully used available materials from the local area.
