Ay Ot Lookout, Heritage villa in Charters Towers, Australia.
Ay Ot Lookout is a two-story Victorian villa on Hodgkinson Street featuring wide verandahs enclosed with cast iron railings and unusually high ceilings throughout. The interior showcases cedar woodwork, marble flooring in the entrance, and decorative exposed wood framing.
The villa was built during the 1890s gold boom when Charters Towers flourished as a mining center. Herbert Foxlee purchased it in 1904 and named it after a childhood home he remembered from England.
The residence shows how wealth from gold mining shaped the town through its architectural details, such as marble floors and carefully crafted woodwork that people can see today.
The property sits one block from the town center of Charters Towers, making it easy to reach on foot during a visit. Today it operates as a museum and community space where visitors can walk through the rooms and see the original furnishings.
The black and white checkered marble floor in the entrance foyer has survived unchanged since the villa's construction in the 1890s. This floor is one of the few original elements that remains in its complete form.
