Lyall's Jewellery Shop

Lyall's Jewellery Shop is a stone commercial building on Mosman Street featuring large curved plate glass windows and an ornate Victorian-style storefront. The structure measures approximately 4 meters wide and exemplifies the commercial architecture that emerged during the gold rush era.

The shop was established in 1897 by David Lyall when the gold rush made Charters Towers Queensland's second-largest city. The construction of this storefront reflects how merchants invested in their businesses during this wealthy period.

The shop's design shows how merchants displayed their wares during Queensland's gold boom era and attracted customers to their doors. Its refined windows reveal the pride local business owners took in their storefronts during prosperous times.

The building is owned by the National Trust and remains in commercial use, so visitors can view the exterior without paying admission. The best time to see it is during daylight hours when the storefront details are clearly visible from the street.

The curved plate glass windows are the only known surviving examples of this type in Queensland and show a rare building technique from that era. Such curved panes were technically difficult to manufacture and only wealthy merchants could afford them.
