ED Miles Mining Exchange, Heritage-listed mining exchange in Charters Towers, Australia
The ED Miles Mining Exchange at 65 Mosman Street is a building with multiple connected offices, a public reception area, and a secure strong room. The structure uses Tobin Tube ventilation systems, high ceilings, and strategically placed windows to maintain comfortable temperatures in the tropical climate.
Edward David Miles established his mining business in 1883 and operated successfully until 1922, working with numerous mining companies across Queensland's goldfields. The building emerged during an era when gold prospecting shaped the region's wealth and mining investments were central to the local economy.
This building shaped how miners and investors in the region conducted business and made financial decisions during the gold boom. Its design reflects the importance that mining activities held for the local community during that era.
The building is located on Mosman Street in Charters Towers and is easily reached on foot from the town center. Visiting during daytime allows you to appreciate how natural light enters through the numerous windows and to see the interior spaces clearly.
This building is the most complete of only four purpose-built mining exchange buildings constructed in Queensland during the 1800s. Its intact state makes it a rare example of how these financial institutions actually functioned during the gold rush era.
