Cairns Regional

Cairns Regional is an administrative area in northeastern Queensland that encompasses the city of Cairns and surrounding settlements along the coast. The zone contains both urban centers and vast natural environments characteristic of the tropical region.

The region was created in 2008 when Cairns City merged with Douglas and Mulgrave Shires. Douglas Shire later separated in 2014 following a public vote.

The Yidinji and Tjapukai peoples maintain their traditions and languages across these lands today. Their communities continue to shape the cultural identity of the area.

This area is best explored by car since settlements are spread across a wide territory. The coastal road links the main centers and provides access points to natural attractions.

The region contains two of the world's most significant natural areas: the ancient Daintree Rainforest within the Wet Tropics and the Great Barrier Reef marine ecosystems. These UNESCO World Heritage sites sit side by side, making this one place where tropical rainforest meets coral reef.
