Michael Boland established this department store in 1912, marking it as the first three-story building in Cairns during an era of predominantly timber structures.
The building played a central role in ANZAC Day commemorations, with the Last Post being played from its rooftop during the first ceremony in 1916.
The ground floor contains retail shops while the upper levels house office spaces, maintaining its commercial function in central Cairns.
The structure incorporated a floating foundation and reinforced concrete construction, introducing innovative engineering methods to Far North Queensland in the early 1900s.
