Cairns Masonic Temple, Heritage masonic temple in Minnie Street, Cairns, Australia.
Cairns Masonic Temple is a two-story concrete building with classical design features located on Minnie Street in Cairns City. It features high-set steel-framed windows and Corinthian columns framing the entrance.
The foundation stone was laid on Armistice Day 1934, and the building opened in October 1935 under Queensland's governor at that time. It was restored after a cyclone struck in 1956 and was later listed on the Queensland Heritage Register.
For decades, the temple served as a gathering place for Freemasons across the region, where members met for ceremonies and meetings. The interior spaces reflect the ritual practices that took place within them.
The building is easily accessible and sits in a central location in the heart of Cairns City. Visitors should be aware that access may depend on ongoing maintenance work or scheduled events at the site.
One of the hollow entrance pillars holds a collection of documents and records that have been preserved since the building's foundation stone ceremony in 1934. This unusual storage method protected the historical materials from damage during the cyclone that struck in 1956.
