Jack and Newell Building, Commercial heritage building in Cairns City, Australia.
The Jack and Newell Building in Cairns combines classical architectural details with a striking early 20th-century facade design. The structure was later adapted and now stands with its preserved exterior as part of a residential complex.
The building was constructed in 1911 as an office for Fearnley & Co Ltd to serve the shipping industry. In 1939 Jack & Newell took over and continued operating it as a forwarding and dispatch center.
The building shows how the port shaped Cairns and the role shipping played in the city's life. Its location and design reflect how central maritime trade was to the community.
The building sits right at the waterfront opposite the main wharves and is easily walkable from the city center. The area has good pedestrian access and offers natural views across the harbor.
This is the last surviving early 20th-century warehouse remaining in Cairns and preserves a direct link to the region's maritime past. Its survival shows how important this structure is for understanding the city's harbor development.
