Cairns Convention Centre is a multi-purpose venue in Cairns, Australia, with multiple spaces designed for different types of events and performances. The facility includes a main auditorium with approximately 2,300 seats and a separate arena with around 5,000 seats for sporting events and shows.
The venue opened in 1996 as Australia's first regional convention center and became an important landmark for the city. An expansion in 1999 added a new arena to serve the local basketball team.
The Cairns Taipans have played their National Basketball League home games here since their inaugural 1999 season, and during those games the arena is known as "The Snakepit". The venue also hosted the preliminary rounds of the men's basketball competition of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
The centre sits on a 2.2-hectare site in the Cairns CBD, about 10 minutes from Cairns Airport. It holds 23 meeting rooms, a 410-seat plenary and banquet space for 400, spread over three levels after the 2022 expansion.
The centre was the first regional convention centre in Australia and the country's first environmentally designed public building; in its opening year it won the inaugural EIBTM award for the most environmentally conscious congress centre. It has twice been named World's Best Congress Centre, in 2004 and 2014.
