Dr EA Koch Memorial, Heritage memorial in Cairns City, Australia.
The Dr EA Koch Memorial is a monument in Anzac Memorial Park with a dome structure supported by four marble columns and sitting on a polished granite base. It stands at the corner of Abbott and Spence Streets with restored lamp fittings integrated into the design.
The memorial was built in 1903 to honor a doctor whose medical work in Queensland took place between 1870 and 1901. He made important discoveries about tropical diseases and their treatment during his time in the region.
The memorial recognizes a doctor who served the Cairns community and was valued for his medical work in treating tropical illnesses. It reflects how local people wanted to honor someone who shaped early healthcare in the region.
The memorial is located at a street corner in the central park area and is easy to reach on foot. The red paving and surrounding park features make it straightforward to find and visit.
Two marble sculptured portraits are displayed on opposite sides of the dome as artistic tributes. These Carrara marble works were added to create a meaningful visual focal point for the memorial.
