Cairns Aquarium, Public aquarium in Cairns, Australia.
Cairns Aquarium is a three-level facility in the city center containing 71 tanks with a combined capacity of 3 million liters displaying marine life from the Great Barrier Reef. The tanks are arranged so visitors can see coral, fish, and other animals in environments that resemble their natural habitats.
The aquarium opened in 2017 and quickly became an important attraction in Cairns. It received a major award shortly after opening for its building design and construction quality.
The place teaches visitors about the relationship between the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef through hands-on displays and live presentations. These exhibits show how land and sea ecosystems connect in this region.
The building is located in central Cairns on Florence Street and is easy to reach on foot. If you want a guided tour, arrive early as these last about two hours and spaces can fill up.
One standout feature is the world's first tidal motion tank, which mimics natural tides. The facility also keeps Scalloped Hammerhead Sharks, a rare species found nowhere else in Australian captivity.
