Cairns Technical College and High School Building

Cairns Technical College and High School Building is a three-story L-shaped structure displaying Neo-Classical design with ionic columns framing the entrance. Brick and concrete construction work together with south-facing verandahs that provide shade and natural ventilation throughout the interior spaces.

Construction ran from 1939 to 1941 as Queensland Government invested in job creation during economic recovery following the Great Depression. The project served a dual purpose by employing construction workers while providing modern facilities for technical and academic training.

The building represents how technical and academic education merged into one institution in the 1920s to serve local needs. This combination shaped how the community viewed practical skills and traditional learning together.

The building sits at the corner of Sheridan and Upward Streets and remains an active school campus today. Keep in mind that as a functioning educational facility, access to certain areas may be limited during regular school hours.

The building continued operating through World War II and delivered technical training for wartime production while military installations functioned nearby. This dual role as both a school and a supporter of the war effort gave it special importance in local history.
