Rennell Island, Coral atoll in Solomon Islands.
Rennell Island is a coral atoll in the Solomon Islands with dense forests and limestone cliffs stretching across the southern region. A large brackish-water lake dominates the southern part, dotted with small limestone islands and surrounded by varied environments.
The island was documented and named in 1801 by Captain Butler during a European expedition across the Pacific. This marked the first known contact with the outside world through Western explorers.
The inhabitants live in four villages around the lake and maintain traditional ways of life today. Fishing and farming shape daily routines and community life across the island.
Visitors reach the island via connecting flights from Honiara's airport to the grass airstrip located on the island. Local boats or transportation services help you move around to explore different areas.
The lake is home to Crocker's sea snake, a species found nowhere else in the world. This rare reptile has adapted to the brackish waters and makes the lake a special place for nature observers.
