Denarau, Private resort island in Ba, Fiji
Denarau Island lies on the western side of Viti Levu and is connected to the mainland by a causeway. The island contains nine international hotel chains, around 40 dining establishments, a working marina, and an 18-hole golf course.
Development began in 1969 when Dennis McElrath purchased the property and opened the first hotel, now the Westin Denarau, in 1975. The golf course and marina were completed between 1988 and 1991 as part of the island's expansion.
The island serves as a hub for visiting traditional Fijian villages in the Mamanucas and Yasawas through the Port Denarau Marina. Regular boat departures connect travelers with local communities in these nearby island groups.
The island sits about 5 kilometers from Nadi town and 10 kilometers from Nadi International Airport, making it easily accessible. Getting there by car or taxi from the airport is straightforward, as the causeway provides direct access.
The island's creation involved clearing significant mangrove forest to make room for the golf course and marina facilities. This large-scale land transformation remains one of the most visible changes to the landscape since development began.
