Fiji, Island nation in South Pacific Ocean.
Fiji is an island nation in the southern Pacific Ocean comprising more than three hundred islands spread across a wide stretch of sea. The two largest islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, feature mountains, dense rainforests, and long coastal stretches with palm-lined beaches.
European navigators reached the islands in the 17th century, but the territory became a British colony only in 1874. Independence came in 1970, with several changes of government shaping political life in the following decades.
Most inhabitants speak Fijian or Hindi alongside English, reflecting the multicultural makeup of the population. In many communities, traditional cloth called masi is made from tree bark and used in ceremonies or as wall decoration.
The dry season from May to October usually offers sunny weather, while the remaining months bring more frequent rain. Nadi International Airport is the main gateway, from where ferries and small planes reach the more remote islands.
Water temperature stays warm year-round, making snorkeling and diving in shallow lagoons possible even for beginners. In some spots you can swim over coral gardens directly accessible from the beach.
