Naval Air Station Barbers Point, former airfield on Oahu in Hawaii, USA
Naval Air Station Barbers Point is a former military airfield in Kapolei, Hawaii, now operating as Kalaeloa Airport. The site features three runways, restored hangars, and vintage control towers from the World War II era that remain visible across the flat landscape.
The base was established in 1942 during World War II as a critical hub for Navy flight operations across the Pacific. It was named after Captain Henry Barber, whose ship struck a coral reef and sank in 1796 near this location.
The site is easy to access with open, flat terrain that can be explored on foot, especially during periods of low flight activity. Visitors should come during daytime hours and watch for traffic signals since the facility remains an active airport.
The site was initially used in the 1930s as a mooring location for enormous dirigibles before becoming a military installation. A single mooring mast for these airships once dominated the landscape here.
