Kipu Falls, Waterfall in East Kauai, United States.
Kipu Falls is a waterfall in East Kauai with a drop of 20 feet (6 meters), forming a deep pool at its base along the Huleia Stream near Lihue. The water collects in a natural basin surrounded by green slopes and thick vegetation.
The waterfall became well-known after appearing in a scene from the 1981 film Raiders of the Lost Ark, which significantly increased visitor interest. This movie appearance transformed the natural site into a popular destination for film enthusiasts.
Local communities have long used rope swings hanging from trees near the falls for jumping and swimming in the natural pool. The practice reflects how this spot has served as a gathering place for water recreation and leisure.
Access to the waterfall requires driving west on Highway 50 from Lihue and turning onto Kipu Road at Marker 3, followed by a short walk. Visitors should prepare for uneven terrain and natural conditions at the site.
Grove Farms Company restricted public access after five drowning deaths occurred at the site over a five-year period. This closure remains noticeable today, as the area is closely monitored and access stays limited.
