Shipwreck Beach

Shipwreck Beach, Sandy beach in Poipu, Hawaii.

This sandy shoreline sits along Keoneloa Bay, backed by sea cliffs roughly 40 feet high that form a dramatic backdrop. The water here features strong currents and powerful waves, making swimming challenging for most visitors.

The beach takes its name from a wooden ship that lay partially buried in the sand for decades before vanishing around 1982. This vessel became a local landmark and gave the location its memorable name.

This location sits within an ancient Hawaiian settlement zone, where visitors can encounter archaeological remains and stone markers scattered across the terrain. The place tells the story of people who once lived here and relied on the ocean for their survival.

Parking and restroom facilities are located near the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort, offering straightforward access to the area. Given the elevated position and rough water conditions, this is better suited to visitors looking for scenery and hiking rather than swimming.

From November through March, visitors can spot Humpback Whales in the water while standing on the sea cliffs, as these animals migrate through Hawaiian waters during this season. This timing makes it one of the easiest places to watch them without a boat.
