McBryde Garden, Botanical garden in Lawai Valley, Hawaii.
McBryde Garden is a botanical garden set in Lawai Valley on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, holding one of the largest collections of native Hawaiian plants in the world. A stream runs through the valley floor, creating pockets of shade and moisture that support a wide range of species across the grounds.
The land in Lawai Valley was once part of a sugar plantation before the McBryde family began converting it into a botanical garden in the 1970s. It is now managed by the National Tropical Botanical Garden organization, which has continued to develop the collections.
McBryde Garden displays plants that were central to daily life in old Hawaii, from food crops to plants used in ceremonies. Walking through the valley, visitors can observe how deeply island life once depended on what grew in the soil.
Visiting early in the morning tends to be cooler and less busy, which makes walking through the valley more comfortable. The terrain is uneven and can become slippery after rain, so sturdy footwear is a good idea.
McBryde Garden is home to a plant laboratory focused on saving species that have nearly disappeared from the wild, sometimes with only a handful of individual plants remaining. Some of these species now exist only within this valley and nowhere else on earth.
