Hanapepe Swinging Bridge, Suspension bridge in Hanapepe, Hawaii
The Hanapepe Swinging Bridge spans the Hanapepe River with reinforced steel cables and wooden planks that create gentle movement when crossing. The structure supports only a limited number of people at one time and features a simple, functional design built for practicality.
The original structure was built in 1911 to help plantation workers and residents cross the Hanapepe River. It underwent major reconstruction following Hurricane Iniki in 1992.
The bridge connects to an art gallery on its western side and serves as a gathering point during Hanapepe Art Night every Friday. Local artists and craftspeople meet here to display their work and interact with visitors during this weekly evening event.
Visitors can park near Aloha Spice Company and should note that only a limited number of people can use the bridge at one time. It is best to arrive early in the day when fewer visitors are present and to wear comfortable shoes for the crossing.
The gentle sway and modest height make it particularly suitable for families with children, unlike taller suspension bridges elsewhere. This also allows people with fear of heights to complete the crossing and enjoy views of the river.
