Allerton Garden, Botanical garden in Lawai Valley, Kauai, United States
Allerton Garden is a botanical garden in Lawai Valley on Kauai that covers 80 acres with tropical plants, sculptures, water fountains, and built structures. Winding paths connect different zones and pass through carefully arranged landscapes with ponds and pavilions.
The valley was home to Hawaiian Queen Emma before later use transformed it. In 1938 Robert and John Gregg Allerton purchased the land and developed it into the botanical garden seen today.
The garden brings together plants from Hawaii, Asia, and Pacific islands in designed spaces that reflect different traditions. Walking through it shows how various tropical cultures valued and grew their botanical treasures.
Guided tours from the visitor center offer the best way to explore the gardens at different times of day. Early morning or late afternoon walks offer the most comfortable temperatures and lighting.
Large fig trees with distinctive root systems served as filming locations for scenes in a famous science fiction film. These natural formations create an unusual backdrop that appeals to both movie fans and nature lovers.
