Glass Beach, Beach with sea glass in Ele'ele, Kauai County, Hawaii.
Glass Beach is a beach in Ele'ele covered with black volcanic sand mixed with small pieces of frosted sea glass scattered among lava rocks. The glass pieces, formed from broken bottles and auto glass over decades, create a shimmering effect across the shoreline.
The beach formed over decades from industrial glass waste dumped near Port Allen Harbor, where ocean waves and lava rocks gradually transformed the discarded material into smooth, frosted pieces. What began as pollution has unexpectedly become a distinctive natural feature.
Visitors and locals enjoy photographing and admiring the sea glass pieces in their natural state rather than taking them home. This respect for the resource helps keep this special place intact for others to experience.
The beach is reached by a short walk from the parking area, and two large gas tanks near the site serve as clear landmarks to help you find it. Wear sturdy shoes when walking on the lava rocks and watch your footing carefully.
The lava rock formation here is called the Swiss Cheese Shoreline because it has countless holes where sea glass accumulates between tidal changes. These pockets offer the best viewing spots for observing the glass pieces up close.
