The 140-acre beach features 12 miles of golden sand with dunes reaching heights of 100 feet along the west coast of Kauai.
The United States Army acquired the beach area in 1940, establishing Mana Airport for military operations during World War II.
Native Hawaiians named this location Keonekani o Nohili, which translates to the sounding beach of Nohili, referring to the sand's acoustic properties.
Access to the beach requires advance permission due to its proximity to the Pacific Missile Range Facility and military operations.
The sand produces sounds similar to dog barks when walked upon due to microscopic holes in the individual grains.
