Mount Hayes, Mountain summit in Southeast Fairbanks Census Area, US.
Mount Hayes is a peak in the eastern Alaska Range that rises to about 4,216 meters (13,832 feet) in elevation. The summit area commands views across the surrounding alpine landscape and forms the tallest mountain in this eastern section of the range.
The mountain was first successfully climbed in 1941 when mountaineer Bradford Washburn led a team to the summit. This early ascent helped establish the peak as a notable climbing destination in Alaska.
The mountain landscape holds deep connections to Alaska Native communities who have inhabited the surrounding territories for numerous generations.
The best climbing season runs from May through June when weather patterns tend to improve and visibility becomes more reliable. During these months climbers encounter more favorable conditions for attempting the route.
The Northeast Face drops steeply with a vertical elevation change of about 2,440 meters (8,005 feet) compressed over a short horizontal distance. This extraordinary steepness makes the climbing route technically demanding and visually impressive.
