Rampart Dam, Cancelled hydroelectric dam project in Rampart Canyon, Alaska.
Rampart Dam was a proposed hydroelectric facility on the Yukon River in Alaska. The project would have constructed a concrete dam about 155 meters tall and 1433 meters long to harness the river's flow.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers initiated the project in 1954 with extensive feasibility studies. It was ultimately abandoned in 1971 due to indigenous opposition and environmental concerns.
Nine Native Alaskan villages faced displacement due to the proposed reservoir, leading to organized resistance from local communities against the construction plans.
The site is accessible only by boat or small aircraft, as it lies in a remote section of the Yukon Flats. Visit during warmer months when the area is more passable and travel conditions are better.
The proposed reservoir would have been larger than Lake Erie, covering an area that is now a National Wildlife Refuge. This pristine wilderness would have been submerged, erasing a vital habitat for migratory birds and other wildlife.
