Ni'iinlii'njik Territorial Park

Ni'iinlii'njik Territorial Park, Nature reserve in northern Yukon, Canada.

Description

Ni'iinlii'njik is a nature reserve in northern Yukon featuring a river system that flows through underground limestone caves and remains unfrozen in winter due to geothermal heat. The terrain offers rugged, undeveloped landscape with alpine and tundra elements.

History

The park was established in 1999 through a collaboration between the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation and the Yukon government. This partnership emerged from a desire to protect the land and its wildlife resources for future generations.

Culture

The Vuntut Gwitchin people call the river Ni'iinlii Njik, which marks where salmon complete their reproductive cycle each year. This name reflects the deep connection between the people and the rhythm of nature.

Practical

Access is by helicopter from Dawson City, which limits visitors to small numbers. Accommodations are available at Bear Cave Mountain Camp in four timber cabins, and visitors should bring their own supplies.

Did you know?

Each autumn, around 50 grizzly bears gather here to fish from migrating salmon runs. This gathering ranks among North America's largest seasonal bear congregations.
