Gómez Palacio, Industrial center in Durango, Mexico.
Gómez Palacio is a city in northeastern Durango state that forms part of the Comarca Lagunera Metropolitan Area, positioned near the border with Coahuila. The municipality spans a large territory with hundreds of smaller settlements and benefits from highway routes, rail connections, and air access via nearby Torreón.
The city was founded in 1885 by Santiago Lavín Cuadra, who designed a grid of streets around a central plaza and offered free land for tree planting. Construction of the Francke power plant in 1930 marked a shift toward industrial growth that transformed the region's economy.
The city's identity is deeply rooted in farming, and this remains visible throughout the region's landscape. Fields of cotton, wheat, and corn surround the area, shaping how locals live and work with the seasons.
The city is easily reached by well-developed highways and rail connections that also link to nearby Torreón. Torreón's airport serves as a convenient gateway for visitors arriving from more distant locations.
The area is part of the Laguna irrigation system, one of Mexico's oldest and most complex water projects in the north. This network enables intensive farming in an otherwise arid region and makes the area crucial for national agricultural output.
