Lomita Railroad Museum, Railroad museum in Lomita, California, US
The Lomita Railroad Museum displays a 1902 Baldwin steam locomotive, a Southern Pacific tender, and vintage train cars that visitors can explore. The site also features a full-scale water tower replica and various freight cars from the early railroad era.
The museum opened in 1966 as a reminder of when steam-powered trains transformed transportation across the United States. The collection preserves rolling stock and infrastructure from this transformative period in American railroad history.
The museum building recreates a 19th-century station design from the Boston & Maine railroad in Massachusetts. This replica preserves the memory of how American railway stations once looked and functioned during the era of steam trains.
The grounds are fairly compact and easy to explore on foot, with open access to most of the train cars on display. Wear appropriate footwear since you will be walking over unpaved areas and climbing in and out of railroad equipment.
The museum owns a well-preserved tender and several specialized freight cars, including a Union Oil tank car, that reveal lesser-known details of railroad operations. These vehicles show how trains served not just passenger transport but also delivered goods and infrastructure support for the expanding economy.
