5900 Wilshire is a 32-story skyscraper featuring clean geometric lines and reflective glass that creates a modern presence along the boulevard. The building houses corporate offices and executive suites with contemporary common areas.
Designed by architect Gin Wong of William L. Pereira & Associates, the tower was completed in 1971 for the Mutual Benefit Life by the Shorenstein Co. of San Francisco. The Ratkovich Company bought the 491,000-square-foot building in December 2005 and began a $34 million renovation that added a new lobby. In 2009 ten original Berlin Wall segments were installed on the front lawn by the Wende Museum.
On the front lawn stand ten original segments of the Berlin Wall, installed in 2009 by the Wende Museum; together they form the longest stretch of the wall in the United States. For the installation, Wilshire Boulevard was temporarily walled off to mark the wall's removal.
The tower stands on the north side of Wilshire Boulevard, directly across from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The Berlin Wall segments on the front lawn are visible from the sidewalk and can be approached on foot. A bus zone serves the LACMA stop across the street; the crosswalk that once linked it to the building was removed.
Variety magazine moved its West Coast headquarters to this building in 2008, making it a center for entertainment industry operations. This media presence connects the office tower to Hollywood's broader influence on the city's culture and business landscape.
