Fairfax High School, Public high school in Fairfax District, Los Angeles, United States.
This campus spreads across roughly 24 acres (9.8 hectares) at the crossing of Fairfax Avenue and Melrose Avenue, right next to the CBS television studios. The grounds hold several two-story brick buildings, outdoor athletic fields, and a separate wing for the Visual Arts Magnet Center.
Classes started here in September 1924 with around 80 students in temporary classrooms. Over the following decades, new buildings and facilities were added to meet the growth of the surrounding neighborhood.
The name honors the 18th-century third Baron Fairfax, who once held vast landholdings in Virginia. Today the hallways and bulletin boards across the campus showcase the full range of languages and home countries that gather here each day.
The grounds are open only to enrolled students and registered visitors during daytime hours, with security staff at the main entrance on weekdays. On weekends the parking lot serves as a public marketplace for a weekly flea market.
Every Sunday the school parking lot turns into the Melrose Trading Post, a popular flea market that has been running since 1996. Revenue from vendor fees flows directly into the school art program, helping to fund supplies and instructors.
