The building was constructed in 1924 and underwent major reconstruction in 1934 following the Long Beach earthquake to meet new California safety standards. This renovation brought significant structural improvements to the facility.

The school's name comes from the Glassell Park neighbourhood, and it has served local children since 1924; it is now a PK-6 school in the Los Angeles Unified School District under principal Claudia Pelayo. Visitors can spot the long south-facing facade along West Avenue 30, 190 feet (58 m) long, which is the building's main public face.

The campus sits at 2211 W. Avenue 30 in Glassell Park, with its long south-facing facade of 190 feet along the avenue; the 100-foot frontage on Carlyle Street is harder to see. It is an active PK-6 school in the Los Angeles Unified School District, so grounds are in use on school days.

Only the 1924/35 school building and its grounds count as contributing resources to the National Register listing. The modular classrooms, playground areas and a cafeteria built in 1951 were judged intrusions that do not add to the property's historic character.
